The Department

The Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus was established by Government Gazette in 1991 and has been operating since 1992. It is one of the oldest Departments of Informatics in Greece.

The core pillars of the Department are education and research. Education is provided across three levels. The first level comprises undergraduate studies, admitting students through the national Panhellenic examinations, which lead to a Bachelor's Degree in Informatics. The second level offers postgraduate studies leading to a Master’s Degree (Postgraduate Diploma of Specialization), and the third level provides doctoral studies leading to a Ph.D. degree.

The UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM provides a solid education in all subject areas of modern Informatics, in line with current global developments in the field. In the 3rd year of studies, students have the opportunity to choose one of three specializations:
1. Software Engineering and Intelligent Systems
2. Information Systems and Services
3. Networks and Computing Systems

Furthermore, the opportunity to acquire Pedagogical and Teaching Competence is provided, enabling the Department's graduates to teach Informatics at the primary and secondary education levels.

The Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus organizes and operates 4 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS (M.Sc.):
• M.Sc. in "Advanced Informatics and Computing Systems - Software Development and Αrtificial Intelligence"
• M.Sc. in "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies"
• M.Sc. in "Cybersecurity and Data Science"
• M.Sc. "Informatics" - This program is designed for graduates from other scientific disciplines who wish to specialize in Informatics.

Furthermore, 2 additional Postgraduate Programs are operated in collaboration with other departments.

The Department of Informatics conducts high-level research, which is documented in a large number of publications in highly prestigious international journals and conferences. The Department has repeatedly received international distinction for its research, earning "Best Paper" awards at international conferences and journals. Based on the research conducted within the research laboratories of the Department of Informatics, and according to the academic tool Microsoft Academic Search—which analyzes data from 25,827 universities and organizations worldwide—the University of Piraeus ranks 1st globally in the following research fields: Mobile Authoring Tools, Adaptive Instruction, Facial Emotion Recognition, and Student Modeling-driven Software Personalization. Furthermore, it ranks 5th in the global standings within the broader areas of 1. Educational Software and 2. User Modeling.

The Department of Informatics has successfully completed its external evaluation process, conducted by leading professors from abroad in accordance with the procedures of the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE). The external evaluation report recognizes the high quality of the undergraduate and postgraduate education provided, as well as the significant contribution of the Department of Informatics to the international research community. It is highlighted that certain research activities of the Department possess prominent visibility both nationally and internationally, noting that "the depth and breadth of doctoral activity was found to be impressive" and that "the curriculum of the Postgraduate Programs of the Department of Informatics is very well defined, and the results show that excellent work is being accomplished."
